Dawn of the Planet of the Apes shouldn't be capable of surprising audiences. It's the sequel to a prequel, with a story line set on an unswerving course as it builds up to the events of the classic franchise of the 1960s and 70s. Just as 2011's Rise of the Planet of the Apes surprised cinema goers and critics alike, Dawn is set to be the blockbuster event of 2014. Storming US box offices on its opening weekend, the only thing predictable about this latest Apes instalment is the number of review stars it'll pick up.

We spoke to Dawn director Matt Reeves on the latest entry to the series, working with performance capturing technology and revisiting his monster epic Cloverfield.
