Karl Pilkington talks us through his new series The Moaning Of Life
“The new show is about me travelling round, looking at the big topics in our lives: kids, marriage, death, happiness, all that. With marriage and kids, especially, I don’t get the fuss. If it’s about having your name ‘live on’ after you, I’m not arsed. People get my name wrong, anyway; most of my post goes to ‘Karl Dilkington’. My council tax says ‘Tillington’. I don’t want to worry about my son still getting called ‘Dilkington’ in 2050, or whatever.
“I go to India to look at arranged marriages. I basically had to chat up this girl’s dad to prove I was good enough for her. We also went to Japan for the episode about money, and I did the most mental job ever. They have these people called ‘benriya’ who will do anything for money; queue up for Rod Stewart tickets for you, rescue your cat, pretend to be your boyfriend, whatever. I had to be a life-drawing model. I had new respect for mime artists after that. That’s something I never thought I’d say.
“I also met this bloke Tommy The Clown. He’s from a ghetto area, and he found happiness by making others happy. So, he dresses as a clown and goes around getting people dancing. I invented a dance called ‘The Crumpet’.
“The thing I learned is some people are never happy. I just read an interview with Buzz Aldrin. He was p*ssed off about being the second man on the moon. It’s like: ‘What’s wrong with you? You’ve been to the f*cking moon!’”
Karl Pilkington: The Moaning Of Life begins on 20 October, 9pm on Sky 1 HD
