Idiot far-right politician vows to abolish Arabic numerals, obviously there's a problem
04 September 2017

It’s a cold, hard fact that at any one point in time, somewhere in the world, there will be a racist saying something stupid. Something ill-informed, laughable and idiotic. This is the truth.

And once in every while, we get to hear about a comment so ridiculous that it invites international ridicule (the best way to deal with people of this ilk). The latest example of this is down to far-right German mayoral candidate Otfried Best, who opened his mouth at a debate last week, and a big shit fell out.

Best, who runs for the anti-immigration NPD party, is hoping (definitely hoping) that he’ll land the slot of mayor in Völklingen, near the French border.

Only he was quizzed, in public, by a member of the satirical opposing party Die Partei, who asked him:

“Mr. Best … I find it alarming that in Völklingen many house numbers are displayed in Arabic numerals.

“How would you like to take action against this creeping foreigner infiltration?”

Otfried Best, an idiot

This was then promptly met with laughter from the audience and Best – an idiot – replied:

“You just wait until I am mayor.

“I will change that.

“Then there will be normal numbers.”

Thing is, see, that Arabic numerals are the numbers that we use today – so 1, 2, 3 and friends. Getting rid of them would mean a return to, I don’t know, Roman numerals? Yet again a silly bigot has made himself look a knob by not knowing about the world around him. Do your research before saying things, basically. Or better yet, just don’t say them at all.

Obviously, because it’s 2017, Twitter jumped on this like a pack of rabid hounds:

And here's a handy explanation of where the numbers came from (they originated from Hindi, FYI):

So yeah, let’s all laugh at the silly man. And don’t worry, he won’t be gaining any power – the NPD are officially recognised as not posing a threat, because they’re unlikely to gain the 5% threshold requirement needed to get into parliament.

WHAT A BIG SHAME.
