David Bowie rejected an invite to work with Dave Grohl with the best email sign-off ever

First we hear he turned down Coldplay, and now Bowie apparently flat out rejected Dave Grohl too.

The Foo Fighters frontman revealed the story during a new video shot by Playboy, saying that he once approached the late music legend to collaborate with him on a track he was creating for a film only to be coolly and charmingly rejected.

In Grohl’s own words:

“About two years ago, I got approached by this movie to do a song for the movie, so I thought, ‘Maybe I’ll have someone else sing, I’ll do the music and then have another vocalist.’ And then I thought, ‘Maybe I’ll ask and see if David would want to do it.’

"The next day I get an email and it says, ‘David, I watched the movie and I got to be honest, it’s not my thing.’ He said, ‘I’m not made for these times, so thanks but I think I’m going to sit this one out.'

“I thought, what a bummer, but I immediately emailed back and said, 'no worries, I totally understand. I hope you’re well, hopefully I’ll see you around.’ And I hit send and within a minute and half I get an email back from him and it says: ‘Alright, well that’s settled then, now fuck off.'

"And I'm like 'Woah, is he kidding?' I couldn't tell, so I emailed back, and said 'Well, I guess I'll see you in another 16 years,' and he immediately sends one back and says 'Don't hold your breath'. So I send one back that says 'What, no more birthday parties at Madison Square Garden?' and he writes back, 'No more birthdays, I've run out of them'

"But then he wrote, 'But that was a really fun night wasn't it?' I didn't think about it until recently when he passed away, it made me wonder, looking back at everything, maybe he was running out of birthdays, and to not hold your breath - it trips me out now to think about it."

Not wanting to end on a downbeat note though, Grohl then ended the segment by giving another example of Bowie's playful sense of humour, adding: "he would email me in March and say 'Happy New Year'."
