Chimpanzee's birthday party

There's a lot of monkeying around

Chimpanzee's birthday party

In 1972, amid a rising awareness of animal cruelty, London Zoo stopped its daily chimpanzees’ tea party. Although in the years to come this would have ramifications for the success of zoos in general, as their role went from being a provider of entertainment to a more educational slant, it was generally agreed that ceasing such activities was a good thing.

However, we’re pleased to see that such correctness didn’t preclude the good people at Belfast Zoo celebrating the 39th birthday of Lizzy the chimp in grand style this week.

Not only was Lizzy presented with a six-tier jelly birthday cake, there was an abundance of bananas for Lizzy and her pals to chow down on and colourful party bags for all.

A heart-warming tale if ever there was one and one that on-looking kids (and adults) seemed to enjoy as well.

We bet the folk at PG Tips were watching with great interest.
