Richard Whittington was Lord Mayor Of London four times between 1397 and 1423 — but whether he did own a cat is a question likely to always be bereft of a definitive answer. But we digress; being a successful mayor of the capital is an honourable job, likely to be remembered for centuries after, and perhaps even woven into pantomimes. And like Whittington, future mayors might even have statues of pets you may or may not have owned unveiled on Highgate Hill. We sat in a Costa with Ken Livingstone in East Croydon station, and accompanied Boris Johnson on the Tube from Turnham Green to Alperton in order to ask ShortList’s social-media users’ most pertinent questions.
