Audi RS7 Drives Itself Around A Racing Track at 120mph
Audi RS7 Drives Itself Around A Racing Track at 120mph
20 October 2014
You don’t need to be Philip K. Dick to feel queasy about driverless cars.
If you're one such skeptic, we’re not sure how much this incredible footage of an Audi RS7 autonomously racing around the famed Hockenheimring track - where it reached speeds of up to 120mph - will help you assess the future of the automotive industry.
On the one hand, it's utterly amazing, a feat of engineering and technological supremacy. On the other, it's fast, really fast. Google has been surreptitiously filling Californian highways with autonomous cars for years; Ford and Mercedes have recently got in on the act, yet until now we'd been more used to picturing the pioneering test vehicles as snail's pace hatchbacks, never mind hurtling around corners at speeds high enough to scare your grandmother.
With a camera planted in the back seat, watching the wheel turn on its own as the vehicle goes into some sharp hairpin bends is enough to imagine the ghost of a dead racing driver has taken hold of the wheel.
Well it’s probably more feasible an explanation than whatever Audi's offering.
