It’s been 11 years since the first ever iPhone hit the market. The smartphone, released back in those hazy days of ‘07, had a 3.5-inch screen, a single loudspeaker and a memory of just 128 MB.

“Despite some flaws and feature omissions, the iPhone is, on balance, a beautiful and breakthrough handheld computer,” The Wall Street Journal’s technology columnist, Walt Mossberg said at the time.
Fast-forward to 2018 and we’ve now got the all-singing, all-dancing iPhone X. Features like the Face ID authentication would have seemed inconceivable a decade ago.
But despite selling millions and millions of the new smartphones - the most expensive Apple has ever released with a starting price of £999 - the iPhone X has now been knocked off its top spot as the best-selling smartphone in the world.

According to the latest research from Counterpoint’s Market Pulse, Samsung’s Galaxy S9 series became the best seller globally, pushing Apple’s iPhone X to the third spot.
The research showed that Apple declined month-on-month due to pretty standard seasonality – the iPhone X has now been on the market for more than six months.
The iPhone X was still Apple’s top-selling model in April, the most recent month for which data is available from Counterpoint Research, taking 2.3% of the global smartphone market, while the smaller iPhone 8 came in at 2.2%.
However, the top two spots were taken by the Galaxy S9+ and the S9, which both hold 2.6% of the global market. However, both were released relatively recently, in March. The S9 retails on the official UK Samsung site at £739 and the S9+at £929.

However, it’s not like Apple is in any sort of crisis; the company continues to dominate the global best-selling smartphone models occupying five spots in the top ten.

Apple are also working on their sequel to the iPhone X and, according to Bloomberg, one of the models they are working on is their largest phone yet, a ‘phablet’.
With a screen of nearly 6.5 inches, Apple’s large new handset will be one of the biggest mainstream smartphones on the market, the site reports.
