BBC wants new series of Planet Earth before David Attenborough turns 100

Planet Earth II only finished this week, but the BBC are reportedly already setting their sights on making Planet Earth III – and they want to do it before Sir David Attenborough turns 100-years old.

Theoretically, it could be done if the BBC got moving, like right now. The voice of the show celebrated his 90th birthday in May this year, and this series took 2,089 days – 5.7 years - of shooting in the field to complete.

"We love working with Sir David and I think he loves working with us, and we want that to last as long as possible," producer Mike Gunton told the Daily Star

The BBC would be "crazy" to rule out making another series,  he continued, but also conceded that they’d "be crazy to say it will be here in three years or even five years' time.

But sadly, Sir David isn’t as active as he once was, and can’t really travel that much anymore. He was not on location at all during the series and the only time he physically appeared in Planet Earth II was for the intro in a hot air balloon going over the Alps, and then once more at the top of London’s Shard in the last episode.

“When he decides he doesn’t want to do any more, we will have to rethink how we make these programmes. You can’t replace him It’s pointless to try.”

Saying that though, it only took a week for him to finalise the script, and just two hours to voice over each episode. So he can still knock it out of the park.

C’mon David, you want it. We want it. All the millenials that stopped watching X-Factor for you want it. Let’s do this.
