Goalkeeper stakes claim for stupidest own goal ever

In these times of austerity, post-Brexit blues and Boris Johnson as Foreign Secretary, we're all in need of something to cheer us up. Happily, one heroic goalkeeper has obliged.

His name is Sammy Ndjock, he's a Cameroon international, and he has just scored an absolutely classic own goal for Bournemouth against his US team Minnesota United in a preseason friendly.

Bournemouth were already one-up when Ndjock experienced his moment of madness/brilliance, attempting to start a quick counter-attack but spinning just that little bit too far around before releasing the ball.

Let's watch it again.

Superb.

What really makes it is that his throw isn't quite fast enough to make it a foregone conclusion that it's definitely going to go over the line. No, almost until the very last second he retains the tiniest shred of hope that he might reach it, yet it remains forever, tantalisingly, just out of reach. There's a real poetry to it.

Naturally, it reminded us of some other moments that keepers around the world world sooner forget. Take a look at these classics:
