The Star Trek: Picard teaser has landed

Jean-Luc who’s back

24 May 2019

It’s been 25 years since we’ve seen Jean-Luc Picard on the small screen, but that wait is nearly over. CBS’ Star Trek: Picard is well into production, and now we have the first teaser trailer to pore over.

If you think there’s not much to study in a minute-long trailer that mainly feels like an advert for vineyard tours, then you certainly don’t know Star Trek fans.

Yes, it seems that Picard has jacked in the whole spaceship managing thing for a quiet life with just him and his wines. Rhyming qualities aside, Picard on a vineyard may seem like an odd curveball, until you remember that wine is the family business, with bottles of Chateau Picard frequently popping up in the show.

But it’s not all about the Chateau Picard product placement. Most of our focus is drawn to the female voice over, which reads a somewhat cryptic script. “Fifteen years ago, today, you led us out of the darkness,” the voice says. “You commanded the greatest rescue armada in history. Then the unimaginable.”

“Tell us: why did you leave Starfleet, admiral?” the voice finishes, with the inquisitiveness of an HR manager interviewing a potential candidate.

It’s not clear what the “unimaginable” event was, though some are speculating it might be the destruction of Romulus, which certainly fits the bill.

We’ll find out when the show launches, but while we know you’ll need an Amazon Prime Video subscription to watch it over here, we still don’t know when that’ll be.

Still, in the meantime you can work your way through Star Trek Discovery, which is comfortably one of the best TV shows on Netflix
