When prisoners at a Sussex jail mentioned that they were eating 'rabbit food', most people assumed they were fed up with eating carrots.
It now transpires that they were literally talking about eating rabbits - and have now been banned from doing so by the prison governor.
There had already been reports of a rabbit infestation at Ford open prison, near Arundel, with the grounds being dug up by thousands of the furry creatures. A cull was then ordered, and pest controllers summoned, but it seems that prisoners had already made a start on reducing their numbers.
A letter from governor Sharon Jefcut to prisoners said: “There have been incidents of offenders killing rabbits to consume them. This practice is unacceptable. Pest control systems are the only means that will be utilised. The killing of rabbits by any other means causes distress to staff members and offenders and is inhumane. Any microwave used for cooking contraband will be removed.”
OK Sharon, keep your hare on.
