Pepsi Is Making A Smartphone

For a number of years Pepsi claimed it had "Something for Everyone" - so long as that something was a carbonated drink.

But now it seems the US cola company is set to make good on its promise, expanding its product range in an unlikely new direction: smartphones.

Reuters has word that PepsiCo will release a line of smartphones and accessories in China in the next few months, with an image of the first handset - the P1 - leaked online.

The grainy leak, collected by Chinese tech site Sina, shows an Android phone bearing Pepsi branding - though there are no details on which company has built the smartphone for the soda company.

A spokesperson from PepsiCo has stated that the company won't be making any smartphones themselves (they'll stick to sticky drinks), but rather use the brand on a licence basis: "Available in China only, this effort is similar to recent globally licensed Pepsi products which include apparel and accessories".

Website Mobipicker has suggested the phone could arrive as soon as 20 October, with "decent" specs - which Phandroid lists as follows:

  • 5.5-inch 1080p display
  • 1.7GHz quad-core processor
  • 2GB RAM
  • 16GB internal storage
  • 3,000mAh battery
  • 13MP/5MP cameras
  • Fingerprint reader
  • Android 5.1 Lollipop
  • 7.62mm thin metal body

Here's hoping Coke responds in similar fashion, sparking a new sodaphone war. Because that's what everyone wants, right?

Just us? Okay.
