"A vintage silhouette brought back to life" has become a stock phrase in trainer design but when it comes from Nike and US-based contemporary design artist Tom Sachs then we know it's gonna be pretty good.
And good it is: striking and, unlike many 'hyped' sneakers, wearable, the Tom Sachs x NikeCraft Mars Yard 2.0 was launch at immersive, interactive Space Camps in NYC earlier in the summer, with invites only going to style's best and brightest (and buzziest) and now it's time for old Joe Shlubbins over here to get his hands on 'em. (That pairs are already going for nearly $900 on eBay is quite worrying, however...)
Inspired by Sachs’ interactions with NASA’s highly specialised scientists, and designed as high-performance equipment for the building of his SPACE PROGRAM 2.0: Mars exhibition, the shoe’s packaging comes emblazoned with the slogan "These shoes are only valid if worn, and worn to death by you. Posers need not apply." The Mars Yard takes the battered-trainer look in its stride and is designed to look even better as they age: the mesh getting grubby, the suede baring its own striking patina, the padded bits on the tongue getting all worn and ripped and shit. Who knows! Make with the shoe what you will. They are yours to wear the hell out of.
The Tom Sachs x NikeCraft Mars Yard 2.0 will be available from Foot Patrol, Sneakersnstuff, END Clothing, and more at 8am GMT on Thursday 27th July
