We’ll word this carefully as you could be reading it right now with a hot cup of black coffee in your hand, but, if a milk-less caffeine fix is your go to drink we’ve got news. There’s an excellent chance you’re a psychopath.
According to a new study, people who enjoy bitter tastes such as black coffee, dark chocolate and tonic water, are a lot more likely to have narcissistic and sadistic characteristics.
The study was carried out by Professor Christina Sagioglou of the Innsbruck University looking at 500 men and women. The groups were asked to rate a list of sweet, salty, bitter and sour food and drinks in order of preference along with answering questions in line with standard psychopathy tests.
Other tests involved looking for personality traits of Machiavellianism, narcissism and sadism and all of which pointed towards very similar findings:
“General bitter taste preferences emerged as a robust predictor for Machiavellianism, psychopathy, narcissism and everyday sadism.”
Dr Sagliogou adds:
“We found particularly robust correlations with everyday sadism, which is a construct related to benign masochism – the enjoyment of painful activities.”
So there you have it. Drink up.
How much of a psychopath are you?
