Kylie is reportedly going to play the legends slot at Glastonbury 2019

We should be so lucky

17 September 2018

Sometimes good things come to those who wait: it looks like Kylie Minogue is finally going to claim her rightful title as Pop Queen of Glastonbury.

The Aussie star was supposed to headline the festival 13 years ago but had to pull out after being diagnosed with breast cancer, but now it’s being reported that she will fill the much-vaunted Sunday afternoon ‘Legends’ slot at Worthy Farm next summer.

A festival insider told The Sun: “Kylie had to pull out of Glastonbury in 2005 just a month before she was due to appear so this performance will be a very emotional and poignant moment for her. She jumped at the opportunity to appear next year and it is the perfect way to celebrate her career.”

The rumour chimes with what festival organiser Emily Eavis said in July. When asked who would be this year’s legend, she said: “I can’t tell you, but I’ll give you a clue: it’s a female. She is not British, but I can’t give you any more clues because it will get me into trouble.”

The Sunday afternoon slot has become one of, if not the most high profile slot in the entire festival over the past few years, with Dolly Parton, Paul Simon and, perhaps most famously, Lionel Richie, entertaining the hungover masses in need of a lift to make it through to the end of the weekend. Last year, the slot was filled by Barry Gibb, who enlisted the help of Chris Martin to play a hit-filled set.

While Kylie couldn’t play Glastonbury in 2005 - eventually being replaced as the Sunday headliner by Basement Jaxx - she did join the Scissor Sisters on stage during their 2010 set. Coldplay paid tribute to Kylie during their set in 2005 by covering ‘Can’t Get You Out Of My Head’.

So how good will Kylie be at Glastonbury?

We have one word for you: extremely.

We’re excited already.

Meanwhile, the identity of the three headliners remains a mystery.

Glastonbury founder told the NME in February that there will be “two or three [acts] that have never played”, while his daughter Emily added, “Headliners should be the best artists around – whether they’re rappers, pop stars or rock bands. The genre is irrelevant – it’s about who is going to produce the most exciting show and is making the best music.”

The last set of odds published in June had Kendrick Lamar, Elton John and Fleetwood Mac as favourites - but will almost a year to go, anything could happen.
