The Super Bowl is just around the corner, and that means ostentatious big-budget adverts aplenty.
Last year’s showpiece came hot on the heels of Donald Trump’s inauguration, giving us this pro-immigration offering from Budweiser and this 84 Lumber ad which was banned from being broadcast in full on TV.
However, last year’s game between the New England Patriots and Atlanta Falcons also provided an opportunity for big apolitical ads, with plenty using the most treasured TV slot of the year to plug their product.
In many cases the product in question was a film, with the likes of Logan and Fast & Furious 8 making the most of their slots, and more upcoming films are likely to get the same treatment this February.
There’s a middle-ground, too, though, with top celebrities often brought in by big brands for their Super Bowl ads.
You know, celebrities like Christopher Walken and Justin Timberlake, who appeared together in arguably the best 2017 advert.
It saw Walken reciting lyrics to Nsync’s ‘Bye Bye Bye’, to advertise antioxidant water brand Bai. Obviously.
And now, as the first teasers start to come in, we’re preparing for another big double-act.
Morgan Freeman and Peter Dinklage have never appeared in a film together… until now.
Not that Game of Thrones wouldn’t be greatly improved by Freeman’s March of the Penguins-style narration, of course, though what wouldn’t be improved by that?
The pair are due to face off during this year’s Super Bowl coverage, as part of another unlikely collaboration.
That’s right, it’s a dual ad spot – for Doritos and Mountain Dew – and a short 15-second teaser has emerged giving us a flavour (geddit!) of what to expect.
We’ll have to wait until 4 February for the full version, but our interest has been well and truly piqued.
