Here's every superhero film that's ever won an Oscar

Will 'Logan' be next?

Here's every superhero film that's ever won an Oscar
02 March 2018

It’s the Oscars on Sunday, dintcha know, and also, Logan is up for one, also dintcha know? Yep, a superhero film - one of the most critically-maligned movie genres - is up for an Academy Award. It’s in the running for Best Adapted Screenplay, and is up against other, ‘proper’ films including Mudbound, Molly’s Game and Call Me by Your Name. Never heard of them mate. Give it to Inspector Knife Hands.

But did you know - did you actually, really know - that Logan wouldn’t be the first superhero movie to win an Oscar? No, there have been a whole SEVEN of them, which I’m sure has blown your mind out of the stratosphere.

Here they are:

The Dark Knight

Won: Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role; Best Achievement in Sound Editing

Nominated: Best Achievement in Cinematography; Best Achievement in Film Editing; Best Achievement in Art Direction; Best Achievement in Makeup; Best Achievement in Sound Mixing; Best Achievement in Visual Effects

Yep, old Heathy boy nabbed a posthumous gong for his wacky portrayal of The Joker, although the jury is out on whether or not he’d have been nominated had he not died. It’s certainly a peculiar choice for such a big category, but hey, Heath was really, really good in the role, so who cares?

The Incredibles

Won: Best Animated Feature Film of the Year; Best Achievement in Sound Editing

Nominated: Best Original Screenplay; Best Achievement in Sound Mixing

Obviously Pixar have got themselves a fair share of Oscars in the past, but The Incredibles is their only superhero film, so that’s why it’s appearing here. What I’m trying to say is: this shouldn’t be a surprise to you or any of your mates.

Zooming through the sky like only a Superman can

Superman

Won: Special Achievement Award

Nominated: Best Sound; Best Film Editing; Best Original Score

I don’t really understand the Special Achievement Award, but just know that in this case it was for visual effects. Because fun fact: Christopher Reeve was NOT actually flying in all those scenes. NOT. ACTUALLY. FLYING.

Spider-Man 2

Won: Best Achievement in Visual Effects

Nominated: Best Achievement in Sound Mixing; Best Achievement in Sound Editing

For all the bits with Uncle Squid, probs, and his big old scary tentacle legs!

Batman

Won: Best Art Direction

Have a little look back at Batman, and it’s proper beautiful, like. It’s almost like the Academy got it right for once!

There’s Big Hero, and his mate, 6

Big Hero 6

Won: Best Animated Feature Film

Not actually Pixar, this time around, but Disney, making a film about a giant marshmallow (I haven’t seen it).

Suicide Squad

Won: Best Makeup and Hairstyling

THIS FILM SHOULD NOT HAVE WON ANY AWARDS
