There's a new free level for the original DOOM video game

Dust off the BFG. Oil up the chainsaw. It's time to head back into the twisted hell of DOOM

John Romero, one of the men behind the 1993 classic, has released a new level for his pixelated classic - for free. You can download it here.

Titled The Inmost Dens, Romero gives the new level for the 23-year-old game the following description:

"With the Toxin Refinery in the rear-view, you make your way to Phobos Mission Control where the computers crunching the data from the Phobos Anomaly are located. You need to use them to gain access to the Phobos Lab, but remember hearing that the computers were tied into all areas of the installation and that you never knew when the environment around you would change. You need to keep your eyes alert to all movement—this place is not what it seems…"

In addition to giving fans of the old game something new to get their teeth (and chainsaws) into, Romero is using the new level to drum up some noise for his latest game, Blackroom. Currently seeking funding on Kickstarter, it's a futuristic first-person shooter that promises a fast, furious combat experience. You'll die loads, basically.

Failing that, you could just get the new DOOM game set to launch on 13 May.
