Nintendo's new console will arrive next year

2016 - the year that could make or break Nintendo.

In addition to turning its hand to mobile games, the struggling games company will begin production of its new console by March.

Codenamed 'NX', the secretive machine will go on sale by the end of the year, with Nintendo preparing to ship some 20 million consoles worldwide. To put that into perspective, Sony has sold 30 million PlayStation 4s since its launch in 2013.

Digitimes, a Taiwanese site with numerous sources in the world of chip manufacturing, has word that Foxconn Electronics has signed a deal to supply components for the NX console - with mass production expected by the end of the first quarter of 2016.

While Nintendo might have ambitious targets in mind, Foxconn believes that a figure of 10-12 million shipments will be more likely - a number that would see the Japanese-based games company recover some serious ground in the console market.

Nintendo is expected to give new details on the NX in the build up to 2016's E3 games conference in June: details are currently scant as to whether they're preparing a "family" focused machine like the Wii and Wii U, or producing hardware that centres on 4K graphics and raw computing power. While not a commercial flop, the Wii U has only sold 10.7 million consoles since its launch in late 2012.

Will Nintendo go the way of Sega, turning its hand to game production? Or will the NX see a glorious return to form? We'll find out in around 12 months time...
