"A Pre-Sequel?" you may scoff - and you'd be right. If any other franchise were to float this as a serious title, they'd be laughed off the internet. But this is Borderlands - the space western whose tongue is firmly burrowed in its cheek. A regular name just wouldn't do.

Gearbox's original role-playing shooter (sorry Destiny) is set to reunite us with some of the series' familiar names in new deep space locations, all of which you'll be able to blow to pieces with the game's characteristic exotic weaponry.

We've got a host of images and concept art to whet your appetite - including some exclusive shots of the new formidable Cryo class weapons: a gun type that sees your foe frozen solid before being smashed into icy particles. Fun? Only if you're not on the receiving end of it.

Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel arrives on 17 October
