Converse scratchable shoes

The joy of a new pair of white trainers is short lived. Their dazzling purity lasts for approximately three wears, before someone in a crowded bar places their grubby sole on your toe and corrupts them for life.

A new collaboration between Converse and fashion house Maison Martin Margiela looks to exploit the frustrations of this wardrobe conundrum. MMM have taken two classic Converse designs - the Chuck Taylor All Star and Jack Purcell - and covered them in the fashion house's signature white paint.

As the shoes are worn in, the white layer of paint slowly flakes and chips off, revealing the true colour of the trainer underneath - black, navy blue, red or an exclusive vintage yellow - and leaving you with a totally unique look. Or as Maison Martin Margiela describe the process, it's “A sort of poetry, with the passage of time, the shoe asserts itself.”

The collaborative First String collection is available from select Converse and Maison Martin Margiela stores for $200. Or you replicate the effect by buying a standard pair and lending them to a plasterer for a while?
