Luxury denim hits the High Street

All jeans are not made equal. Anyone who’s ever shuddered at the idea of looking like they’re presenting Top Gear can attest to that. But that doesn’t mean you have to hand over £200 every time you buy a pair to get it right.

The high street has always had plenty of wearable denim. And you can now add another shop to the ‘must investigate’ list.

Marks & Spencer is relaunching its denim collections and offering four distinct cuts — regular, boot, straight and slim fit — so you know exactly what you’re getting. These are consistent across the collections, but the most tempting of all are the cuts from the premium Autograph range.

Priced at £45, they’re made with the luxurious selvedge denim introduced by M&S for autumn/winter 2010 and are both heavier and more durable. This is because the material is made on slow-speed shorter-width looms with a continuous thread.

So that’s a tick next to both quality and value for money. And, most importantly, an even bigger tick against “Don’t make me look like a middle-aged TV presenter”.
