World map of coffee drinking

Which country can't survive without its caffeine fix?

17 January 2014

It’s a serious business, coffee. We know this, you know this, but what you may not know, our caffeine-fixed friends, is that no nation consumes more of it per capita than the Dutch.

Or at least that’s according to this handy world map of coffee drinking hotspots, above. Created by the clever folk at Quartz using data harvested by Euromonitor, it reveals that, on average, residents of Holland gulp down a pupil-dilating 2.414 cups a day.

That’s more than double US consumers, who trail with 0.931 cups. And if you thought the land of Starbucks was lacking, look no further than espresso-hounds Italy, who tally a lowly 0.336 cups - a figure which even puts them behind the UK’s 0.389 cups.

We’d understand if you never took ‘grande or’ venti’ seriously again.
