The Origins of Memes video

Once upon an internet, memes were an efficient shorthand for the common man, breaking down complex emotional reactions with a popular images and phrases. Grumpy cat. Overly attached girlfriend. Ermahgerd geek girl. We knew the score. We were part of the popular web crew. But now, we're living a lie.

We have to pretend that "of course we're familiar with the piece of popular culture that meme is referencing", but we really don't. There are just too many to keep on top of.

Mercifully, Top10Memes (we didn't even know there was a ranking system) have stepped in as saviour of our internet points. Their video, The Origins of Memes, provides sources for all the major in-jokes of online communities, playing clips of the original material alongside the meme in question.

It even helps identify where some mega memes have misquoted the original material, upping the potential for you to drop a condescending put down in the near future. You can thank us (or rather, Top10Memes) later.
