The biometric gym shirt

The line of gadgets queuing up to measure our lives seems to be growing by the week: smarthwatches, fitness bits, clever headphones, things you stick up your nose after a jog. Mercifully, a far more comfortable option has skipped to the head of the line.

Rather than inserting any microchips into your blood stream (or worse), the silver fibres sown into OMsingal's compression shirts allow it to grab all your vital statistics the moment you put it on. The shirt's tracking centre - a small black box that slots into a pocket on the chest - can then compile and transmit every conceivable piece of fitness data to your phone via bluetooth.

By collecting data on your heart rate, breathing rate, breathing depth and steps walked, the OMsignal shirt can effectively nag you like a personal trainer - telling you when your breathing becomes irregular, or when your heart rate has dropped below its desired rate. It's also clever enough to determine when you really weren't trying your best at the gym (the horror). By pumping the data through the OMsignal app, the system then creates new fitness targets to pester you with.

Anyone who's been tempted to delve in to the world of wearable tech would do well to give these biometric shirts a go when they're released later in the summer. Just do us a favour and make sure you turn off the social alerts that tell us all what your new resting heart rate is?
