Despite the unrelenting march of globalisation, it's still pleasing to travel the world and find people in different places are still attached to different styles of music.
You can't go round Jamaica without hearing soundsystems blasting out reggae on every street corner and you'd do well to travel Brazil without hearing some samba.
And Spotify have used their musical stats to show us exactly what people around the world are listening to, creating this fascinating world music map. For each of around a thousand cities, they've created a playlist of a hundred songs which are "distinctive" to that location. More specifically, it's music "that people in each city listen to quite a bit [but] people in other cities also do not listen to very much."
Unsurprisingly, there's a distinct variation even within the UK: it's hugely pleasing to see old-skool garage still appearing in London's playlist (DJ Luck and MC Neat, So Solid Crew (pictured above), DJ Pied Piper and Sweet Female Attitude are all in there), while The Courteeners and The Stone Roses dominate Manchester's, showing that there's plenty of civic pride still at play.
Take a look at the map below and see what people are listening to around the world - the playlists for a few selected UK cities are below.

As Content Director of Shortlist, Marc likes nothing more than to compile endless lists of an evening by candlelight. He started out life as a movie writer for numerous (now defunct) magazines and soon found himself online - editing a gaggle of gadget sites, including TechRadar, Digital Camera World and Tom's Guide UK. At Shortlist you'll find him mostly writing about movies and tech, so no change there then.
