There's a lot to be said for bowing out while you're at the top, and Ricky Gervais is the master of it in the comedy world.
After The Office and Extras both ran for two series, before a final festive flourish, it seems that Derek will be finishing in the same fashion. Gervais was recently nominated for a Golden Globe for his performance in the Channel 4 comedy-drama series, but that's not stopping him calling time on the character with an hour-long Christmas special next Monday (December 22nd).
Speaking to Graham Norton in an appearance to be broadcast tomorrow (Friday) night, he said "Like The Office and Extras there will only be two series and a special. For now, it's the end. It just feels right."
Of course, The Office eventually ran for a whole lot longer in its American guise, to great success, so nothing can be ruled out for the future, but for now it seems that Derek will be hanging up his boots just in time to put them in front of the fire for Christmas.
