Military Chess Sets

That's check mate, Mr Bin Laden

Military Chess Sets

The ways in which chess and military operations are related are innumerable – although it goes without saying that you can come to less harm playing chess. Unless you’re playing our mate Simon, that is. Don’t beat Simon at chess. It really isn’t worth it.

Anyway, it was only a matter of time before someone came up with chess pieces based on actual army personnel. So that’s what former Canadian special forces soldier Jeffrey Train has done.

Dubiously titled Terror Chess, various sets have been produced, each modified to relate to the country in question. So while our Queen obviously steps up for the role of Queen in the British version, the Statue of Liberty is the US equivalent. We’re not sure why Tony Blair still gets to play the role of King though.

In all cases, al-Qaeda is the enemy, with the recently fallen Osama bin Laden King. Train clearly knows his market: the set has proved to be something of a hit among serving soldiers in Afghanistan.
