Casey Affleck spoke about #MeToo without addressing the allegations against himself

Another classic non-apology here

Casey Affleck spoke about #MeToo without addressing the allegations against himself

Casey Affleck won an Oscar that time, didn’t he? Thing was, it all got a bit overshadowed by the fact that two women made damning accusations against him surrounding his inappropriate behaviour on the set of his 2010 film I’m Still Here. As a result of this, he found himself in the midst of a hefty backlash, and he slipped out of the public eye for a bit (although he was definitely still working).

Anyway, he’s addressed the controversy, in that very particular I’m-not-going-to-address-this-properly way that actors who’ve done something bad like to do.

At the premiere for his new film The Old Man & the Gun, he spoke to Variety, and made it clear that he’s “changed” as a result of the movement. he said:

“I mean, look, if you haven’t learned anything from all of this, then you really haven’t been paying attention, and that goes for everybody.

“It’s probably a conversation that deserves a little more time than standing on a red carpet, but I would say that one of the most important lessons is to try to remain as open as you can to other perspectives and to listen to other peoples experiences and, you know, take care of one another.”

No apology, of course, but like, at least he sort of answered the question, maybe? Who knows, this is Hollywood - after a few quiet months or so of laying low and not doing any more bad things, everything is alright again. Phew!

In case you were wondering where that apology was, he has already expressed regret at his actions, when he spoke to The Associated Press in August, saying:

“I really did not know what I was responsible for as the boss. I don’t even know if I thought of myself as the boss. But I behaved in a way and allowed others to behave in a way that was really unprofessional. And I’m sorry.”
