Barber's hair products of choice

14 July 2013

We're fed up of gels that reduce our hair to that of 14-year-old school boy's and mousses that can't handle our desired quiff needs.

In order to solve our hair product quandary we turned to Matt Stark, head stylist of Stark Salon of The Refinery at Harrods. Having groomed the likes of Premiership Footballers and oil shiekhs, Matt is a fountain of knowledge on the subject of men's hair products. Here are his recommendations.

Shu Uemura Cotton Uzu

Shu Uemura is a wonderful hair care range that I’ve recently started to work with within my salon. Its striking packaging was what first caught my eye, so I felt compelled to sample them. They’re stunning. It's a unisex range but don’t let that put you off: the waxes, pastes and styling creams are second to none. In particular I have to shout about Cotton Uzu, perfect for a slick slightly wet look finish. It boasts a good hold and feels great in your hair. A great all-rounder, it can be applied to wet or dry hair, short or long.

Shu Uemura Ample Angora

This is king of the mousses - great if you’re looking for that perfect Elvis quiff. This is one of my favourite products that we use it regularly in the salon – loads of my clients buy it for home use after they’ve tried it. Apply a generous amount to wet hair, give it a quick blast with your hair dryer and you’ll have a quiff of epic proportions.

Moroccan Oil Curl Cream

Moroccan Oil is a product I’ve worked with for quite some time. Great for use on hair that's dry and curly, if you’ve got a frizzy texture to your hair this is a real stand out product . If you're embracing your curls, this will help define and control them, and generally make them look fantastic. Also, if you stick with this oil over time it has the added benefit of improving the condition of your hair.

Redken Rough Clay

Redken have great products on the market for men and they’ve been one of my favourites for years. Rough Clay is my preferred dry finish clay, the best on the market in my opinion. It's great as it lasts all day long, is good for adding texture to short choppy haircuts and best of all avoids looking too greasy. You only need a small amount for the perfect finish – it’s a real must have if you like your hair short and sharp.
