Deadpool wants Canada in the Eurovision Song Contest - and he ain’t taking no for an answer
We’re now just days away from two of the greatest cultural events of 2018. I am, of course, talking about the final of the Eurovision Song Contest and the release of Deadpool 2.
But why am I discussing these titans of entertainment in the same breath? I’m glad you asked.
It turns out that Ryan Reynold’s Deadpool is properly angry that Canada continues to be snubbed and denied a spot in the mega-popular singing competition.
In a genuinely clever piece of marketing for the upcoming film, Deadpool – to a backdrop of Canadian flags – says: “Canada, a beautiful country steeped in rich, musical history that includes the likes of Adams, Bieber, Young, Bublé, Shatner.
“And yet, we’ve been snubbed by that European singsong competition thing you guys lose your shit over.”
“Our generous gift of Céline Dion alone should earn us an invite,” Reynolds - who is Canadian - adds. “Don’t give me that crap about Canada not being part of the European family. You let in Australia and they’re barely on the planet.”
“Well it stops now, Europe. You’ve awakened a sleeping moose.”
When you think about it, he’s actually got a very, very good point. Australia has now competed in the contest since 2015 and they’ve done really well each year. Their 2016 entry Dami Im almost won the whole damn thing before eventually finishing in second.
And I say: why stop with Canada? INVITE THE WHOLE WORLD! Make it a 50-hour non-stop musical marathon. Because all of us can literally never get enough Eurovision, and you know that’s the truth.
You can watch the Eurovision final on BBC One on Saturday at 8pm and Deadpool 2 in UK cinemas on 16 May
