These four whiskies are under £20 and are world beaters

If you’re in the market for a tasty whiskey, then it looks like Aldi is a good bet. The supermarket chain has just picked up five medals at the Spirits Business Scotch Whiskey Masters awards: four gold and one silver.

That’s quite a big deal: the competition is based on a blind taste test, taken on by a panel of independent judges.

Another reason to get yourself down there: every one of the winners comes under £18. The gold medalists were the Malt Black Scotch Whiskey (£13.49), Islay Single Malt Scotch Whiskey (£17.49), the Single Malt Scotch Whiskey (£17.49) and the Hogwash Blended Malt Scotch Whiskey (£14.99). The £13.49 Highland Black Scotch Whiskey, meanwhile, ended up with a silver medal.

In fact, the supermarket may need to introduce a trophy cabinet to its special buys range, given that this little haul takes the number of spirit awards won to 17 in 2019 alone.

“These results are a testament to our dedicated buying team’s ongoing hard work to bring great-value spirits to our shelves and Aldi’s unwavering consistency in sourcing only the highest quality spirits for our shoppers,” said Julie Ashfield, Aldi UK’s managing director of buying. “We’re delighted that all five of the whiskies entered were awarded medals, and even more thrilled that four of them achieved gold.”
