Jake Gyllenhaal's 'Everest' is a horror film where the bad guy is a mountain

everest1.jpg

Climbing Mount Everest isn't what it used to be.

The tallest mountain in the world was once a grim titan, claiming the lives of many who attempted to reach its barren summit.

However, on a single day in 2012, 234 climbers reached its peak, forming an orderly queue on its upper slopes.

Jake Gyllenhaal's new film, Everest, looks to put the fear back into the (slowly shrinking) mountain.

Following in the footsteps of "climbing a mountain when something goes wrong" titles like Touching the Void127 HoursK2North Face (you get the idea), Everest follows the expedition of Scott Fischer (Gyllenhaal) and his team when a vast snow storm impedes their descent.

With a cast including the likes of Keira Knightley, Robin Wright, Josh Brolin and Sam Worthington, this is the adventure disaster film you know is going to be perfect for that tender Sunday morning hangover in years to come.

(Everest scales cinemas on 25 September)
