The Sony WF-1000XM3 are next-gen true wireless earphones

Better noise cancellation means less stress

08 July 2019

Sony has announced a new version of its popular “true wireless” earphones, the Sony WF-1000XM3.

The earphones take the brilliant WF-1000XM2 and add some of the tech from the hugely successful WH-1000XM3, the company’s over-ear noise cancelling pair. Sony claims a 40% noise reduction improvement. It's impressive, especially considering their small size.

So, how does it work? Its all down to Sony’s QN1e noise cancelling chip, which Sony has also updated since the WH-1000XM3’s release. This “intelligently blocks out background noise”, giving you a completely seamless listening experience.

As TechRadar points out, the chip is also responsible for the earphones’ 24-bit digital-to-audio conversion, improving sound quality. The “Quick Attention” feature, available in numerous Sony devices, is also a draw. Just put your hand near your left headphone and your audio will automatically reduce in volume so you can hear what’s going on.

A charging case gives you around 24 hours of music. The headphones themselves last around six hours before needing to hibernate in the case. And a quick charge function provides 90 minutes of listening time from a ten minute charge.

As for connectivity, the headphones use a method similar to the AirPods. They have an dedicated chip to connect both headphones directly to your phone – so, unlike other wireless in-ear headphones, you won’t be scrambling around trying to connect them to each other before you connect them.

The Sony WF-1000XM3 will be available in July at a cost of around £180.
