Bring Me The Horizon's Ultimate Playlist

Bring Me The Horizon's Ultimate Playlist

Sheffield-based five-piece Bring Me The Horizon are one of the UK's biggest and best metal bands, achieving success across the world with their run of albums and live shows since forming in 2004, culminating in 2013's hit record Sempiternal.

To celebrate the announcement of their biggest UK headlining gig to date, which will take place at Wembley Arena on December 5th 2014, we caught up with keyboardist from the band, Jordan Fish, to go through his Ultimate Playlist, which includes several songs which you wouldn't necessarily expect. All though, are excellent (especially the penultimate selection). Read on and find out his choices.

Bring Me The Horizon play Wembley Arena on 5th December 2014. Buy tickets here. Sempiternal is out now. For more information visit

Favourite movie soundtrack song

I know it's an obvious choice but the Jurassic Park score is in my opinion the best movie soundtrack ever. You can't imagine that film without the tune in your head. It's got that perfect mix of sadness, fanfare and epicness to fit with the film. John Williams' CV tells you everything you need to know.

Favourite sad song

Radiohead - Codex. I could probably pick a handful of my favourite sad Radiohead songs but I have been listening to The King Of Limbs again recently so decided on this one. Like with most Radiohead tunes there's usually one bit I really love and in this song it's the line "the water's clear and innocent". It just works really well with the piano. Then there's the weird bit afterwards which is amazing too.

Favourite song from my childhood

Arrested Development - Mr. Wendal. My cousin used to be really into rap music when I was younger and he gave me a cassette with loads of old hip hop and rap on it. Me and my sister used to sing along to this song all the time in the car. There was also a tune called Funky Cold Medina on there... No idea what that means but it was a cool song.

Favourite club anthem

I'm not big into clubbing really, I'm an old man when it comes to that kind of stuff. Shit music doesn't get any better when you turn it up and surround yourself with drunk morons. Having said that I quite like some of the old school sounding Euphoric dance music and we'll often reference it when writing. I always end up making little catchy synth leads that sound like faithless... loads of reverb. So I guess the classic: Faithless - Insomnia.

Favourite song that no one else has heard of

DNKL - Hunt. One of the guys from DNKL sang backing vocals on our album. Lee (Malia) from my band got me into this and I love the bass sound in particular on this tune. I also think Scandinavian accents sound cool... I might start putting one on when I sing.

Favourite wedding song

I had my first dance with my wife to Paper Moon by Ella Fitzgerald so that song brings back happy memories of my wedding day.

Favourite current song

We're touring with a band called Letlive. and I'm hooked on a tune called Pheromone Cvlt. The chorus is so catchy and the lyrics are cool too. The whole album is cool and has a Glassjaw type vibe but with a more melodic and soulful element in there.

Favourite lyric from a song

I'm terrible with lyrics, I just sing along with gibberish most of the time so this is a tricky one for me. As Glassjaw are fresh in my mind, I like the chorus of Radio Cambodia.

"It's a shame that our messiahs move their pawns from different mountains/And we're left to dance these bodies 'round the fountain/If a leader preaches worship to the sheep within the valley/Who'll be riding in a tank that says "just married"?"

Favourite one hit wonder

I've opted for the world's most famous stutterer Scatman John with his debut single - I'm A Scatman. Technically he had a few follow up singles and Scatman's World performed well but I think even he knew that I'm A Scatman would always be his biggest hit.

Musically it takes inspiration from a lot of other pop music that was around at the time - thumping 4-to-the-floor kick, arpeggiated euro synths, an uplifting and catchy vocal melody... but beneath the cheap pop veneer and overwhelming wall of "Scat" lies some deeper meaning. In his first Verse, John targets stutterers everywhere -

Everybody stutters one way or the other/So check out my message to you/As a matter of fact I don't let nothin hold you back/If the Scatman can do it so can you.

Of course he's not just referring to stutterers. Anyone who is struggling or lacking confidence can relate to John's positive message. Surprised? Don't be because in verse 2 John goes deeper and more philosophical than before...

Why should we be pleasin all the politician heathens/Who would try to change the seasons if they could?/The state of the condition insults my intuitions/And it only makes me crazy and my heart like wood.

To be honest I don't know what this means but I think he's connected the fact that he has a stutter with the government somehow. Or maybe it's an anti-establishment protest statement or something... Either way it's a great verse.

Verse 3 - John turns up the heat by flipping the song back on those who've questioned his style, his abilities, his motives, his medical qualifications...

I hear you all ask about the meaning of scat/Well I'm the professor and all I can tell you is/While you're still sleepin the saints are still weepin' 'cause/Things you call dead haven't yet had the chance to be born.

This last line is particularly poignant and I think what John is trying to say is "For god's sake, give me a chance... I might have a stutter but that doesn't mean I can't be a pop star!"

He's taken his disability and used it to his advantage and for that he should be respected. R.I.P.

Favourite Song From Your Own Music

I like a song called Empire from the last record. It's slow and heavy and quite different to the rest of the album and is really fun to play live. I like what Oli did with the lyrics.
