Play the 16 Bit Borderlands

Borderlands 8-bit.jpg

Lots of old games series have endured long enough to have shiny HD updates.

There's the obvious ones like Sonic The Hedgehog, but it's less well known that the original Duke Nukem was a side-scrolling shooter released in 1991, while Metal Gear Solid's Solid Snake started life in 1987 on the NES.

And now we come to Borderlands 2. Thought the series only started in 2009 with the search for Pandora's mythical vault? Well, you'd be correct. Have a brownie. Or a Pulp Fiction $5 milkshake. But should you stumble across wubwub.eu, you'd be forgiven for thinking otherwise.

Hosted there is The Border Lands, a Mega Drive style game claiming to be from 1989. It's a clever marketing ruse, of course. But it's also a decent time-waster in its own right. We can imagine our younger self happily slotting this into his machine as a break from Aladdin or Battletoads.

And, in other new Borderlands 2 news breaking today, it's just been announced that 5,000 packs of limited edition Top Trumps will be available for people pre-ordering the game. But only if you do so from an independent retailer. So get to it. See it as your own version of hunting for the vault.

Borderlands 2 is released on 21 September on Xbox 360, PS3 and PC
