The next Apple update is get to help you get more sleep

Mobile phones have been erroneously blamed for many things over the years: causing cancer, setting petrol stations on fire, crashing planes. While these dangers may continue to linger under your touch screens (they don't), a new Apple update is set to fix one far more practical disruption.

An irksome side effect that a growing body of research is pinning on our electronic companions is their detrimental impact on our sleep. The logic goes that big, bright smartphone and tablet screens emit a whole bunch of blue and green light frequencies - a spectrum of light our bodies associate with daylight hours. This can suppress the production of melatonin - a hormone the body releases when it's preparing for a night of kip.

While there are numerous apps available that can help reduce the light emitted by a device's screen, Apple is set to create their own in-built function with the release of iOS 9.3.

The new operating system will come with a function called 'Night Shift', a setting which if active will use "your iOS device’s clock and geolocation to determine when it’s sunset in your location. Then it automatically shifts the colors in your display to the warmer end of the spectrum, making it easier on your eyes. In the morning, it returns the display to its regular settings."

There's no exact release date for iOS 9.3, so you'll just have to stick to a (paper) book before bed for now.
