Man Builds Incredible Detailed Shining Maze Model

There's recently been a competition to build a maze in the grounds of the Stanley Hotel, the place which inspired Stephen King to write his classic novel The Shining, but they really should have gone straight to this guy.

Modelmaker and Mythbusters host Adam Savage of Tested spent almost a month building this incredibly detailed scale replica of the maze featured in the legendary Stanley Kubrick film adaptation after seeing a model in the travelling Kubrick memorabilia exhibition and noticing that it was not accurate.

Using film footage, as well as behind-the-scenes images, he plotted out the maze on custom graph paper, before setting to work building it, using an MDF variant. In total, he spent 55 hours making it, used 93 feet of flocked hedge and finished it with model characters and streetlights.

It's so good that the Kubrick exhibition has now requested that it be flown out to join the rest of their exhibits, which will be on display in Mexico until July.

You can watch Adam talk through the construction of the maze in the videos below - the second is a more detailed walk-through, explaining the challenges he faced along the way. In addition, there's some work-in-progress photos. A-maze-ing.
