Mace Windu Tipped For A Star Wars Spin-Off

Mace.png
"The path of the righteous Jedi is beset on all sides…" Wait, that’s not right, let’s try another: "I’ve had it with these mother*cking snakes on this mother*cking spaceship…" Hmm.

If, like us, you struggle to recall the lines spoken by Samuel L Jackson’s Mace Windu in the Star Wars series, you’ll doubtless remember him best as the bad-ass space warrior who generally sat around a lot, flirted with Yoda and only got interesting when he got his purple lightsaber out (not a euphemism).

All of which makes it doubly interesting that the lesser-seen character is now hotly tipped to get his own origins story, possibly directed by upcoming filmmaker A.J Edwards, who teased Reddit users following an AMA session recently when quizzed over his potential involvement in the new Star Wars franchise.

Responding to first-time Reddit poster Hanklucgodard, Edwards, who is seen as something of an up-and-comer in the film industry, and was chatting to Reddit users to coincide with his directorial debut The Better Angels, replied twice, stating, "Talking about it, not able to say a lot yet", and "It will focus on Mace Windu".

As it stands, Disney and Lucasfilm have signed up five directors for six movies they have in the pipeline: namely J.J. Abrams for Episode VII The Force Awakens, Rian Johnson for Episodes VIII and IX, and Gareth Edwards and Josh Trank for two of three slated spin-offs, of which - if Edwards’s comments are to be believed - Windu will play a major role.

Given the complexity of the casting situation (read: Samuel would be too old to play the Jedi unless it was set in the years before he met his demise at the hands of the Dark Side) and little information on the character's back story, Edwards seems to seems to have brought up more questions than he’s answered.

Rather than being guilty of blurting out too much before the ink’s dry, perhaps he was hoping to fire up the rumour mill in the hope it’ll land him the project…

Jedi mind games already? He was born for the job.
