Ernest is making a comeback

Remember that hilarious comedy franchise of the 80s? No, no that one. Or that one. Or that one either.

But that other one you'd probably repressed all memory of: the Ernest movies.

Ernest P. Worrell was a rubber-faced goon who first appeared in a commercial and soon headlined a set of surprisingly successful comedies, including Ernest Goes To Camp and Ernest Saves Christmas.

But as the takings started to dwindle, the series moved to the small screen and by 1998, it was time to say goodbye. After Ernest star Jim Varney died in 2000, it seemed as if the franchise was long gone.

But, in what might be the most bizarre idea you'll hear all week/month/year, Ernest is making a comeback. According to Variety, the creator of the character, John Cherry, is planning a new instalment called Son Of Ernest, which will, unsurprisingly, focus on Ernest's long-lost son. It worked so well with Son Of The Mask so...

"We plan to honor the originals and Jim Varney while birthing a new chapter that lies somewhere between not sucking and Earth-shatteringly funny," claims screenwriter Dan Ewen.

Oh and there's a teaser poster. Amused yet?
