Space Invaders, anyone?

If you’re looking for new ways to waste time at work, you’re in luck: thanks to the Internet Archive, you can now play classic Apple Macintosh games in-browser.

The “curated presentation of applications, games and operating systems” includes an early version of Mac Paint and demos of classic games including Lemmings, Space Invaders, Frogger and more.

"If you've not experienced the original operating system for the Macintosh family of computers, it's an interesting combination of well-worn conventions in the modern world, along with choices that might seem strange or off-the-mark," wrote the Internet Archive’s Jason Scott.

"At the time the machine was released, however, they landed new ideas in the hands of a worldwide audience and gained significant fans and followers almost immediately."

The Internet Archive is already stuffed with vintage in-browser apps and games – 10,000 PC games to start, and various other arcades.

If you want to have a go, the whole list of Macintosh programmes is here – or you can just play the 1985 version of Space Invaders below (double click the icon, then click the small black ‘play’ box).
