As far as difficult follow-up albums go, Vince Zampella has it tough. One of the key names behind little-known military shooter series Call Of Duty, his long-awaited next project is, at last, nearly here.

If you happened to miss Titanfall’s multi-award winning appearances at various game conventions over the past year, then let us bring you up to speed. A multiplayer-only shooter (because, really, that was the main draw of Call Of Duty), you fight either as a free-running pilot, or you can take control of a Pacific Rim-style ‘Titan’. The Titans have different load-outs, but on a base level there are two classes of fighter. One small but quick, one hulking but able to decimate all before it with one aimed shot of a cannon – an expertly balanced game of cat-and-mouse. Or to be more specific, gravity-defying-superhuman-and-tooled-up-mechanical-giant.

But this game could well be more important than ‘just’ the next project from the man behind Call Of Duty. It’s Xbox exclusive (well, Microsoft exclusive – it’ll be on PC, too), and it’s hard to imagine a more anticipated game in the next-gen console wars.

More than Forza Motorsport 5, more than Dead Rising 3, and certainly more than goddamn Ryse, this is Xbox One’s greatest weapon in the opening skirmishes with the PS4. There’s a lot resting on it, but presumably 18ft-tall mechanoids should be able to shoulder the expectation.

Titanfall is released on 14 March on Xbox One, Xbox 360 and PC
