Super Mario Odyssey co-op lets second player control Mario's magic cap

Because this game wasn't ridiculous enough already

Super Mario Odyssey co-op lets second player control Mario's magic cap
16 June 2017

We’ve seen plenty of Mario’s new sentient hat at E3, without doubt the USP of the backflipping plumber’s latest game, Super Mario Odyssey.

By launching “Cappy” at all manner of objects and enemies in the game, Mario can take control of them, opening up gameplay scenarios that could potentially be weirder than anything we’ve seen in the Nintendo mascot’s history – and that’s saying something.

The most memorable example of this new power we’ve seen so far came in Odyssey’s Spotlight trailer, where we saw the red cap possessing an actual prehistoric Tyrannosaurus rex.

In case you missed it...

We’ve since learned that the game will also feature a co-op mode that allows a second player to assume the role of Cappy. As well as being able to whizz around bashing enemies, the eyeball-lined flying hat is also invincible, making it the perfect way to play Odyssey with a younger person, or indeed someone who’s just a bit rubbish at video games but doesn’t like you hogging all the fun for yourself. Either way, it’s a nifty idea, and all you need to do is slide the Joy-Con controllers from the Switch to get going. One controls Mario, the other Cappy.

Skip to the 4:45 mark of Nintendo’s livestream to see the multiplayer mode in action.

And here it is in GIF format. For some reason Mario doesn’t seem to be having a great time, but you’ve never seen a happier piece of enchanted headwear than Cappy.

Super Mario Odyssey launches October 27 exclusively for the Nintendo Switch.
