Rockstar have even put together a guide to some of the animals, complete with Latin names

Red Dead Redemption 2 is just over a month away, which means we’re allowed to talk about it every single day until its release. We don’t make the rules.

The game will be excellent, as per our unbiased predictions, and we’re even getting ultra-realistic horse testicles as part of the deal. There aren’t too many other games that can boast such detail.

There’s more to be excited about than just that, of course, and we’re in line for a heck of a lot of amazing nature in the game.

How many animals can you name? Double it. Still not close.

In a new blogpost, Rockstar Games have confirmed there will be more than 200 species of animals in the game.

Some might say that’s too many, but to us it looks like the exact amount of attention to detail you want from this sort of game. If they care enough about, idk, badgers or whatever, then imagine how good the important stuff will be.

“Deer, bison and pronghorn traverse the plains in large herds, scavengers quickly sniff out carrion, sockeye salmon leap upstream, wolves attack in packs surrounding their prey, geese fly in fixed formations, possums play dead, rodents scamper into tree hollows, grizzly bears bluff charge when threatened, and birds of prey soar on thermals,” the post reads.

“They all form part of a complex ecosystem and must continually fight for their place on the food chain.”

Is it like Blue Planet with more guns? Not for us to say, but also, yes. Absolutely.

There’s a breakdown of some of the wildlife here, including Latin names, of course.

If you thought you didn’t care about the Eastern Turkey Vulture or the Banded Gila Monster, there’s still time to catch up and pretend they were your priority all along.

The new game is a prequel to the original Red Dead Redemption title, with some of the same characters, along with the veritable Attenborough grab of animals. That’s right, we’re using Attenborough as a collective noun now.

Red Dead Redemption 2 is released on 26 October – plenty of time to become a wildlife expert in preparation.
