We promise this isn't a joke. No matter how ridiculous the sentence "It plays all your Nintendo 3DS games in 2D" might sound, this is Nintendo's actual strategy for their new handheld console, the 2DS.

In essence, this is the original Nintendo 3DS handheld minus the clam design - or "streamlined", as Nintendo prefer to describe it. The same gameplay controls are joined by a sleep button, wireless connectivity and the ability to play both 3DS and original DS games - but all in "old skool" two dimensions.

As the release trailer hints, the 2DS is being marketed as Nintendo's entry level handheld device, aiming it at younger gamers for whom three dimensions are just one 'D' too far. From its wedge-shaped design (available in blue and red) to the bizarre decision not to include a 3D to 2D slider switch, the 2DS is an altogether ugly confusion from Nintendo.

But given that it's aimed at kids, expect parents to pick up several hundred thousand of the things just in time for Christmas (along with Pokémon X and Y, which comes out on the same day). GAME are offering the new handheld for £109.99.

The Nintendo 2DS will arrive in the UK on 12th October
