Nintendo fans are going to have to wait until 2017 for the NX console
27 April 2016

Good news, Nintendo fans!

The Japanese gaming company is hard at work on that Zelda title you've been waiting (over a year) for! It's coming! Honest. And it'll be available on the secretive new NX console as well!

Bad news? You're going to have to wait until next year to play either of them.

This story began all the way back in January 2013 when The Legend of Zelda was first announced, adorned with promises that it would change many of the series' conventions. The first screenshots and in-game footage then turned up in 2014, along with a scheduled release date of 2015.

In March last year, the game's producer Eiji Aonuma stated that the title would be "the ultimate and most complete Zelda game", but that, in order to achieve this, more time was required. Nintendo fans grumbled, but it was no bad thing: no one wants a rushed, half-baked video game. Rumours also started circling about a new console to replace the Wii U, codenamed the NX.

Skip forward another year, and we get the above tweet: we'll get to play the new Zelda at this year's E3 (yay!), but it won't release until 2017 (boo!). As to when in 2017, another tweet suggested that the NX would arrive in March: surely it would make sense for Nintendo to line the game up as the new console's launch title?

However, if history has taught us anything, Nintendo's release dates should be treated with as much faith as a paper lifeboat.

Here's hoping it's incredible. Lord knows we've waited long enough to play it...
