How to pick your own Eevee evolution on Pokémon GO

And find out the story behind why it works

How to pick your own Eevee evolution on Pokémon GO
27 July 2016

Right, you've got yourself an Eevee on Pokémon GO. You've collected enough Eevee Candy to evolve that little critter into a badass fighting machine.

But your heart is set on getting your very own Vaporeon. How do you force the hand of the evolutionary process and get your own water type pet?

As confirmed by Niantic CEO John Hanke, there's one neat Easter Egg trick to get you the Eevee evolution of your dreams.

It's all down to naming

The trick relies on renaming Eevee before you evolve it.

Some users are reporting the stunt only works the first time you use it, but we've not seen enough video proof to confirm this.

To get a Jolteon...

...name your unevolved Eevee "Sparky".

To get a Flareon...

...name your Eevee "Pyro".

To get a Vaporeon...

...name your Eevee "Rainer".

You might want to consider going for this evolution: Vaporeon gets a healthy dose more hit points than the other evolutions, making it a brilliant critter to leave at your local gym.

Why does this work?

Well, the Easter Egg is a neat tribute to an episode of the original Pokémon cartoon series: in The Battling Eevee Brothers, three characters each had an evolved form of Eevee called Rainer, Pyro and Sparky.

If you need us, we'll be watching more episodes of the old show trying to find more Easter Eggs...
