The new 'leaked' Nintendo controller is really freaking people out

It's a bit different

24 March 2016

Edit: This 'leaked' controller has since been proven to be a fake device created by an avid Nintendo fan on their own 3D printer. We'll just have to guess at what Nintendo has up their sleeve for a few weeks longer.

You know the drill: rumours start flying around that a tech company is working on something big, an official spokesperson hints that there might be some truth in it, and then the leaks turn up - usually in the form of a blurred photo of a metal square that looks like it was taken from a moving van. Blindfolded.

Not so with the Nintendo NX. Not only has Nintendo confirmed that it's working on a new console, the first leak of the hardware has been taken by someone who knows how to operate a camera.

This is apparently the mobile controller unit that will accompany the NX.

Want another? Oh, okay then...

The photos don't give all that much away about the nature of the mysterious NX. Rumoured to incorporate an at-home console with controllers that double as portable gaming units, the images are remarkably similar to a patent the company filed many months ago.

The patent outlined a controller that would lack front-facing buttons, in favour of an interactive touch screen that could change depending on the desires of the developers - or become a portable console in its own right.

Posted to Reddit, the user perkele37 shared some details about the controller design:

  • Only the upper 'nubs' of the sticks move. The bottom part is static (kind of like the circle pad, but it moves along the bottom ‘sphere’.
  • The rollers on the top feel and look pretty much identical to a mouse scroll-wheel. Though I do don’t believe this will be the final design.
  • Haptic feedback is feels like Apples ‘taptic’ engine. Not like regular rumble.
  • 3.5mm headphone jack on the bottom.

Yes, it's an unconfirmed leak form an unknown source - but it does bear a striking similarity to the patent designs.
