Parents are apparently paying ‘tutors’ to teach their kids to get better at 'Fortnite'
02 August 2018

A LAT of people playing Fortnite, isn’t there? Everyone that isn’t you, basically - all playing Fortnite, their brothers and sisters playing Fortnite, their mates, and most likely - if they have them - their kids. That’s where the money is, ain’t it? In the kids. The kids want to play it, the kids want to be good at it, the kids want to be the best MUM BUY ME LESSONS OTHERWISE I SHALL SCREECH.

Yep, that’s what we’re down to now - parents are actually paying through their bodily orifices (most likely: nose) for lessons to make their offspring better at a computer game.

According to an article in the Wall Street Journal, it’s a tricky situation for parents because the game is so popular with the youngsters - it’s got the stage where if you’re not good at it, you’re a big nerd or something and you’re gonna get your pants yanked up your back in the bogs.

One mother said:

“There’s pressure not to just play it but to be really good at it.

“You can imagine what that was like for him at school.”

Yeah, getting his boxers ripped on the regs, probably. Parents interviewed in the article talked about their need to make sure their kids were keeping up with the latest trends and not getting left out of social groups, as well as - perhaps surprisingly - preparing them for a career in professional gaming. The latter, well, fair enough? You can make loads of dough out of that - shame no careers adviser of ours ever suggested it to us, the charlatan.

Of course, gaming tutors have been “a thing” for a while - but they’re usually only required at the professional level - parents rinsing their money on their children just so they don’t get wedgied at school is a new phenomenon, much like Fortnite itself.

Fortnite coach Logan Werner said:

“It’s really surreal to me. My dad would have never paid for me to take videogame lessons.”

So what does the internet think? Well, predictably it’s split:

Then again, it doesn’t matter about your, or anyone’s opinion, because it’s a thing, and it shall continue to be a thing. Best thing for you to do is hire a tutor, get better than the tutor, become the tutor. You have approximately six months to do this before everyone gets bored of Fortnite

Off you go.
